What a sports chiropractor does that a general chiropractor does not

2026-09-10 · 6 min · Dr. Joanne Fava

A general chiropractic visit is often spine-focused: neck, mid-back, low back, a few stretches. That helps many people. It is not enough when the reason you cannot play is a shoulder, an ankle, or an elbow that has to tolerate sport next week.

A Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) trains in athletic injury, sideline decision-making, and extremity care. The exam includes how you serve, swing, cut, or catch — not only whether a vertebra is stiff.

At Functional Sports Medicine that also means event medicine experience: covering championships, working as Chief Medical Officer at Nathan Benderson Park, and writing plans athletic trainers can use.

Choose the office that already thinks in seasons, not in “come back if it still hurts.”
