Running and triathlon

Keep the aerobic base. Fix the breakdown.

Road miles, a brick, and a Gulf swim do not fail the same tissue. The knee that talks at mile six, the calf that seizes in transition, and the shoulder that only hurts in chop are different problems. We change the load that is breaking you. We do not pull you off the week without a reason.

Venice and Sarasota have a real running calendar. V-Pack meets at Centennial Park on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6 a.m. 99 Bottles runs a Wednesday 5K downtown. Fleet Feet Sarasota meets on Thursday at 6 p.m. Saturday long runs still go over the Ringling Bridge with Manasota Track Club.

Triathlon adds the Gulf. Sarasota Storm points swimmers to Siesta Key, Nokomis Beach, and Venice Beach. Meet Me at Blue is the standing Siesta group, three mornings a week at 7 a.m. Say which workout you are trying to keep. The plan has to survive that session, not only the treatment table.

What we treat on the run and in the water

Runner’s knee

Pain under or around the kneecap after a bump in mileage is usually a hip that is late, not a knee that failed on its own. We treat both and keep the easy days.

IT band at a set mile

Lateral knee sting at the same point on the Ringling or the Legacy Trail is a hip-capacity problem. Rolling the band without changing the week is why it returns Sunday.

Foot, calf, and the first steps

Plantar fascia and Achilles pain on the walk to the coffee pot is a load problem. We dose the tendon. We do not hang a cold calf off a step and call that care.

Hip on the long run

A hip that pinches after the Saturday miles is often the stride and the glute, not a week off. Hills and speed can wait until the catch is gone.

The brick

The run off the bike is where the calf and the low back volunteer. We look at the position on the bike and the first mile, not only the run shoe.

Open-water shoulder

Sighting in chop asks the neck and the cuff to do extra work the pool never did. Stroke and volume change before another hard Gulf day gets added.

Heat and Florida miles

A February pace is not an August pace. Humidity writes the workout. We plan the week around that, not a northern calendar.

Stay in the group

The goal is the Monday 6 a.m. or the Wednesday 5K, at a pace the tissue can keep. Two honest days beat three that restart the pain.

Venice/Sarasota Area Clubs

Local area run clubs and open-water swims

We are not the club. We are the clinic runners and triathletes use when the knee, foot, or shoulder starts writing the week. Mention where you train on the first visit.
